The Temple of Heaven was a royal altar specially used by the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for "worshiping heaven" and "praying for valleys". It is the largest and most complete ancient temple complex for worshiping heaven in China. It perfectly embodies the ancient people's reverence and desire for communication with "heaven", and is renowned for its rigorous symbolic layout, wonderful architectural structure, and profound cultural connotations. It was listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1998.

The architectural layout of the cosmology of "round sky and square earth"
Overall symbolism: The entire altar area is divided into an inner altar and an outer altar, with the main buildings concentrated in the inner altar. The northern wall is circular, while the southern wall is square, symbolizing a "round sky and square earth".
Axis design: A north-south axis connects the main buildings, namely the Round Hill Altar, the Imperial Vault, and the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, which are respectively used for worshiping the heavens, enshrining deities, and praying for a bountiful harvest.
