Tiantai Mountain, located in Tiantai County, Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province, is one of the most famous cultural mountains in eastern Zhejiang. It is not only a national 5A-level tourist attraction and a national scenic spot, but also the birthplace of the Tiantai School of Buddhism, the founding place of the Southern School of Taoism, and the hometown of the Living Buddha Jigong. It boasts a profound cultural heritage and beautiful natural scenery, and is known as "the source of Buddhism and Taoism, with beautiful mountains and rivers".
The most distinctive feature of Tiantai Mountain lies in its unparalleled religious and cultural significance, where natural and cultural landscapes are perfectly integrated.
**Ancestral Temple of the Tiantai School of Buddhism:** The eminent Sui Dynasty monk Zhiyi (Master Zhiyi) founded the Tiantai School, the first school of Chinese Han Buddhism, here. Guoqing Temple, located on the mountain, is the fundamental ancestral temple of the Tiantai School, and also the ancestral temple of the Tiantai School in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, holding a revered position in the world of Buddhism.
**Birthplace of the Southern School of Taoism:** Tiantai Mountain is also an important holy site for Taoism. Zhang Boduan, the founder of the Southern School of Taoism, wrote and taught here, and his ancestral temple, Tongbai Palace, is located in the mountain, hailed as the "Ancestral Temple of the Southern School of Taoism."
**Hometown of the Living Buddha Jigong:** The well-known "Living Buddha" Jigong (Li Xiuyuan) was born in Tiantai County. His former residence in the town is a good place to learn about this legendary figure.
Shiliang Waterfall Scenic Area
Core Attraction: This is the most unique natural landscape of Tiantai Mountain. A naturally formed granite ridge spans between two mountain cliffs, resembling a giant stone bridge. Below the ridge, a waterfall (approximately 40 meters high) cascades down into a deep pool, forming the spectacular "Shiliang Waterfall." This is also a sacred site where Buddhist Arhats manifested; upstream from the ridge is Xiafangguang Temple (the site of the Five Hundred Arhats).
Cultural Heritage: Shiliang Waterfall is not only a natural wonder but also a place rich in cultural heritage. Xu Xiake visited this area twice and recorded his observations in detail in his "Travels of Xu Xiake." The ridge is also engraved with inscriptions by literati from various dynasties.
