The World Devil City, also known as Urho Ghost City, is located in Urho District, Karamay City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is a typical Yadan landform scenic spot. Named after its unique wind eroded terrain and mysterious and terrifying howling winds, it is known as the "most magnificent Yadan in China" and one of the "50 places in China worth visiting by foreigners".
Yadan landform is in Uyghur language, meaning "a small hill with steep walls". The Yadan landform features of Devil City are as follows:
Different shapes: Rocks have been eroded into various shapes by wind, some resembling castles and towers, some resembling animals (such as eagles, peacocks, and sea lions), and some resembling human figures (such as "devil couples"), resembling an abandoned medieval city.
Rich in color: The rock layers are mainly composed of sandstone and mudstone in various colors such as reddish brown, gray green, yellow green, gray white, etc. Under sunlight, they present rich color layers.
Gully crisscrossing: Countless ravines of varying depths divide the mound into independent units, forming a maze like pattern.
Due to its unique desolate and mysterious temperament, Devil's City has become a filming location for many movies and TV dramas, and is known as the "best outdoor location for westerns". Famous works include:
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Yujiao Long and Luo Xiaohu had classic scenes here.
Seven Swords Under the Tianshan Mountains ": Many scenes in the movie were filmed here.
No Man's Land ": The road and wilderness scenery at the beginning of the movie is right here.
Others: "Visitors on the Iceberg", "Su Wu Shepherd", etc.
Natural Landscape and Climate
Wind: This is a windy area, especially in spring, where strong winds are the main driving force behind the formation and alteration of the Devil City landscape.
Sunrise and Sunset: At sunrise and sunset, the sunlight is slanting, and the contrast between light and dark on the mound is the strongest, with the richest colors, making it the best time for photography.
Starry Sky: Due to its distance from urban light pollution, the night sky of Devil's City is clear and the Milky Way is clearly visible, making it an ideal place to capture the starry sky.
