Yandang Mountain, located in Yueqing City, Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, extending partly into Wenling City, Taizhou, is one of China's ten most famous mountains. It derives its name from the description of a lake atop its summit, overgrown with reeds that form a marshland where wild geese roost in autumn. Renowned for its unique peaks and strange rocks, cascading waterfalls and springs, and ancient caves and stone chambers, Yandang Mountain enjoys the reputation of "a famous mountain by the sea, a marvel of the world," and was historically known as "the foremost mountain in Southeast China." It is also among the first batch of national key scenic spots, a national 5A-level tourist attraction, and a world geopark.
Yandang Mountain is a typical Cretaceous rhyolitic ancient volcano, its geological landscape formed by a volcanic eruption more than 100 million years ago. Unlike common granite or karst mountains, the rocks of Yandang Mountain mostly exhibit a rhyolitic structure, which, after being eroded by flowing water, has created a unique landscape:
**Strange Peaks:** The peaks are mostly sharp and precipitous, such as Scissors Peak, Clasping Hands Peak, and Solitary Beauty Peak, each with a different shape and changing form with every step.
**Strange Rocks:** Weathered rocks have formed various figurative rocks, such as Couple Peaks, Rhinoceros Gazing at the Moon, and Old Monk Worshipping a Pagoda, all remarkably lifelike.
**Waterfalls:** The mountain's many cliffs provide excellent conditions for waterfall formation, among which the Dalongqiu Waterfall is renowned worldwide for its unparalleled drop.
